My close friends will know that I really enjoy frog porridge. There was a period of time when I travelled around Singapore, hunting for the best frog porridge. I respect that everyone’s taste will be different but in my personal opinion, Geylang 19 Eminent Frog Porridge is the best you can get based on my search thus far.
It has been more than 3 years, since I started visiting this place for their ‘Gong Bao’ frog porridge. It has evolved from just a single storey shop house and slowly it extended to the side alley, and now they have expanded to another 2 units. This is clearly a sign that the shop has been doing well in the past few years.
I feel that what sets this shop apart from the rest is the way they marinate and cook the frog which makes it such a pleasure to taste. The meat is cooked till it is soft and tender and is visually appealing in its presentation. The shop has other styles of cooking for example cooking the frog with ginger onion but ‘Gong Bao’, I feel, is their best dish. It goes very well with porridge and its spiciness is a nice contrast to the consistency to the porridge.
This place not only serves their popular frog porridge but also has a wide variety of other dishes such as Sambal Kang Kong and other types of vegetables. For egg lovers, there are different styles of fried eggs such as Fried Onion Eggs, Fu Yong egg and many others. They also serve different kinds of meat such as the local favourite; Sweet and Sour Pork, Pork Ribs, Hot Plate Tofu and more.
For me, I prefer coming here for supper and since it closes pretty late at about 4am especially the weekends, this suits me perfectly.
